Create a video or write a short essay on the histories, cultural knowledges and peoples of the local Indigenous community. You may want to visit historic sites, cultural centres or other places of Indigenous significance to create your video or write your essay (2000 words). If you choose to create a video, it should not exceed 5 minutes (+/- 10%) and you must upload a document to Turnitin which includes a complete reference list and an open access link to view the video. The video should be uploaded to Youtube (public) or Echo (open viewing).
On successful completion you will be able to:
Identify, research and find appropriate resources in your local area, be this where you reside or work.
Demonstrate an understanding of Indigenous histories and cultures and how this might be taught and applied in an educational setting
Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the diversity of Indigenous people groups, histories and cultures e.g. not treating the many First Nations groups of so-called Australia as one homogenous group and identity.
The purpose of this assessment is to demonstrate your understanding of your position as a future policy worker in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures, knowledges, and histories. Throughout the first five weeks of this unit, you will engage with academic publications, TEDxTalks, conversations pieces and activities which problematize the ways in which non-Indigenous peoples historically and continuously misrepresent Indigenous peoples. You are expected to synthesize the learning that you have done (and will continue to do) in the first five weeks of the unit, as well as conduct further academic reading. In essay OR video form, you must demonstrate your understanding of the criticality needed when researching and representing Aboriginal peoples, and the implications this has on teachers who are expected to incorporate Indigenous content into their classrooms.
You will demonstrate your understanding of ‘best practice’ when researching the community you have chosen, as well as the implications accurate representations have for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. You are expected to argue your decisions backed by academic literature.
