here is instructions to explain it generally copy pasted but contact me to get more specifics on instructions. The research proposal is due November 1rst the rest of the project is due throughout the rest of this semester. The secondary parts of this project will require calculations done in previous assignments I have given on this website.
The Signature Project in this class is a scientific collaboration in which each student will INDIVIDUALLY study the viability of their own exoplanet to possibly support a human colony in the eventuality that the Earth becomes uninhabitable due to climate change. Hopefully at least one student’s planet will have the key properties to support human life!!
In Unit 2 we learned all about how we find exoplanets and how we measure their key properties such as mass, size, density, mean temperature and the natures of their host stars. In Homework #4 we wrote a preliminary abstract for our Signature Project. Since then we’ve learned all about the Radial Velocity and Transit methods, and what they can teach us about the properties of exoplanets. For this assignment we will write our Final Project Proposal to ask the National Science Foundation (NSF) for funds to conduct our research to find a habitable exoplanet.
Scenario:
You are proposing to analyze Radial Velocity Curves and Transit Light Profiles for an exoplanet from the NASA archive (your specific planet will be assigned to you for HW #8). Your goal is to measure the key exoplanet properties that will allow you to assess whether or not it is habitable. Your results will be useful for future exobiology searches or possibly even human colonization.
As a reminder, read all about Project Proposals in this document. Download document. Here are the components of your Final Proposal:
Rewrite your Abstract, incorporating your new, deeper understanding from Unit #2. As before, it should be between 200-400 words, and include all five basic Abstract sections described in the Project Proposal documentDownload Project Proposal document. [20 points]
Write the Science Justification. This should be between 400-800 words and present a balanced discussion of background information, the program’s goals, its significance to astronomy in general, and its importance for the specific sub-field of astronomy it addresses. [40 points]
Write the Technical Justification. This should be between 400-800 words and explain how the proposed measurements and/or calculations will achieve the stated scientific goals. [40 points]
You can type your proposal directly into Canvas or upload a single PDF file (preferred). Important Reminder: All submissions are automatically scanned by plagiarism software, so make sure your work is your own.
REMINDER: Carefully read the Rubric for HW#7, and reread the Rubric for HW#4 (for the abstract). Also, read the Project Proposal Document!
