Healthcare has changed significantly in the last decade. Technology has advanced exponentially, hence, requiring nurses to learn new software and program frequency. Learning new systems is very challenging as nurses are unfamiliar with most of the emerging technology that is being adopted to provide healthcare services (Barnard, 2002, pp.15-26). The inability of nurses to keep up with technological innovations relating to the provision of healthcare has made them to lose their competitive edge in the workplace. The effective use of technology allows individuals to carry out their activities faster and more efficiently. Consequently, the failure to use technology can effectively hinder nurses from being unable to rise through the ranks. Nurses are also likely to become irrelevant as they are likely to lack the knowledge and skills required to meet their customers’ needs and wants over time. This will be, especially, be detrimental to old nurses as new graduate nurses are likely to have a better capability to embrace the use of emerging technology in the provision of healthcare services (Barnard, 2002, pp.15-26). Finally, nurses who are unable to assimilate the latest technology in their workplace are often forced to spend more time playing catch up when compared to their peers. Using agile and powerful technology is proposed as a strategy of enabling nurses to take advantage of technology to ensure they remain relevant in providing healthcare services.
The nursing theory that would have been most effective in solving the problem of the application of emerging technology by older nurses is the Lewin’s Change Theory of Nursing. Kurt Lewin first developed the theory to analyze how change can be implemented in the nursing profession (Kaminski, 2011). The theory divides change into three main stages, namely unfreezing change, refreezing the change and unfreezing the change. The first unfreezing stage will allow nurses to prepare on how transition from the use of old nursing patterns into the adoption of a new process of behaviors, habits and thoughts. Specifically, the stage provides nurses with the opportunity to be conversant with the application of skills that are necessary for the adoption new technology (Kaminski, 2011). The refreezing stage involves establishing the learnt skills and processes as the new norm. This allows nurses to let go of old nursing processes while applying new processes when dispensing their duties. The next unfreezing process will be carried out to allow for the assimilation of new technology. The next theory that should be implemented to solve the problem of emerging technology in nursing is King’s Theory of Goal Attainment (Kaminski, 2011). The theory insists that nursing is a process of action, reaction and interaction through which nurses and clients share information about their perceptions regarding various nursing situations. Specifically, the theory explains the process of human interactions between nurses and clients which often entails setting goals, discussing the availability of means, and agreeing on the specific means that will be used to achieve goals (Caceres, 2015, pp.151-155). While the patient offers knowledge of themselves and their perspective of the challenges they are facing as a result of the medical condition they are suffering from, the nurse contributes their professional perspective to help both parties to come up with suitable interventions. Therefore, nurses are required to set goals on how they can implement continuous learning on the application of technology in their career. Specifically, this enhances the capability of nurses to provide patients with suitable solutions on how to overcome challenges that result from their medical conditions through the use of technology. The theory will also allow nurses to easily set goals and to formulate strategies on how attain them to increase the quality of their service delivery. The improved assimilation of technology will allow compassionate care to be easily implemented in nursing (Caceres, 2015, pp.151-155). Care with compassion is at the heart of nursing. Consequently, the discussion above highlights how registered nurses can improve their ability to understand and empathize their patients’ needs by integrating theory into practice in order to provide appropriate and high-quality healthcare services.
