This week, you are going to explore the potential presence and impact of gender bias in different types of communications. Read the two press releases under this Module’s Discussion Readings and use them as inspiration for your exploration. Choose your own adventure! Choose one of the two options for activities listed below. For both, keep the following in mind:
Pay attention to gender bias in the language used. Look out for what language is used and how language is used differently for people based on their gender. Things such as who is involved in a story, names used in examples, the types of occupations people have, what traits people have and activities they may engage in, and how people are described in relationship to another (X’s spouse vs. their own name) are just a few ways in which gender bias can appear. For example, phrases such as “male nurse” or “female surgeon” suggest gendered defaults for nurses and surgeons and occupations for people based on their gender.
