IDENTIFY THE SHIFT OR MEASURABLE
DISTINCTION THAT HAS HAPPENED OR IS
HAPPENING NOW + DISCOVER /ARGUE WHAT
‘RISING’ OR ‘FALLING’ FORCES (OR MINDSETS,
ZEITGEISTS, ETC.) MADE THAT SHIFT HAPPEN.
Things shift all the time, but why or how? What caused a particular change? For
Essay 2, you read or dig “below the surface” to ARGUE why a shift or change
happened or is currently happening. You can’t “argue” OBVIOUS things, so one
way to avoid revealing the obvious “reasons why” something changed or shifted
or produced a measurable distinction is to intertwine “interdisciplinary forces”:
that is, your thesis can weave together forces or mindsets that are psychological,
economic, technological, political, gendered, sexual, spiritual, etc. As examples of
forces, you can look at “rising” psychological forces (or widespread mindsets,
such as the entitled mindsets that Machiavelli reveals); or look at “falling” forces
(such as shrinking self-esteem of social media users, etc.). Couple your
psychological forces with economic ones, such as the rise of women in the
workplace, or the fall of male wages, etc. Use the news to help you see rising/
falling (expanding/ shrinking) forces, mindsets, and share cultural attitudes that
you can weave into your analysis of some kind of shift, change, or measurable
distinction
ASSIGNMENT
You can list your rising/ falling moves (“plus” /”minus” moves) using the sheet on
the assignment page. Or you can just upload your introduction and mark the
words and phrases that show forces (or mindsets, conditions, etc.) that are
RISING/FALLING, or EXPANDING/CONTRACTING, or SPEEDING UP/ SLOWING
DOWN, etc.
TIPS:
While this Canvas course provides you with some student samples, be sure to
think of how to phrase your idea yourself. Don’t grow addicted to “templates”
since many universities expect you to think on your own. These templates are
training wheels; the wheels must come off if you are to really think!
